It's amazing how we can go, as a nation, from "He may have.." to "HE HAS!" to "Well, we knew he didn't have but we had to motivate you, right? Let's go see Mel Gibson's stolen Pagan psychodrama!"
Anybody remeber this little pic?
How often do you see that little chart of verified sites of weapons and various sundry associated things we weren't supposed to question too closely?
Why were we at war? Depends on when you ask, and you are only as reliable as you are loyal to my agenda.
If you had asked this a year or two ago the response would likely have been "His weapons." But now we fall back on blaming him for our own stupidity ("Intelligence failure"..!). The sentiments "We called his bluff!' and "He still has them.. somewhere." are nothing more than attempts at justifying our refusal to admit we were wrong. What were the real reasons behind invading Iraq, with no evidence of a link to al-Quada (the Saudis, now... but they are our friends! Who cares if we have evidence that they support terrorist agencies with our oil money?) and no evidence of weapons (and we were assured by the Secretary of State that Iraq lacked even conventional weapons capacity)?
The real reason is a "trust me."
See, the evidence as to why our soldiers should die in Iraq is classified. The president says he will order an inquiry into where the evidence went wrong, but we never saw that evidence. He literally expected us to take him at his word. My question is: Why weren't we shown that evidence if we were so sure that we were right, and if we were than where are the weapons? And if we weren't sure about them, then why are our men dying over there right now?
not so far back... Even Bush the smarter had something to say about this.
Does this offend anyone?
It shouldn't. It is a little glimpse of reality. Yet we aren't supposed to see anything but the pro-us propaganda that the government dishes out. There is even a page devoted to the subject. When was the last time you saw anything like these on the news? And if you did, when was it not followed by some petty 'morality-based' excuse as to why we should be over there because Saddam was "a bad man." This is not disputed, though his worst atrocities were commited when we were allied with him. (If we don't find any WMD I suppose we could plant some.. and justify the US seals on them with the fact that we gave him more in the early '90s.) There are plenty of "bad men" out there - such as the various dictatorships in Africa where bastards among men govern totalitarian regimes and where any insolence is punished with death. Why aren't we doing anything about those places? And is this all just an excuse to establish a global government centered around Oceania? After all, "who's next" quickly becomes a challenge, and with the notion of a "war on terror" running around we can use this as a stepping-stone to global control. The only consolation is that Bush may be too slow to know what to do with it.
I am not saying that we should be defenseless among a hostile world. Protect our freedoms and way of life, but in order to be successful we must leave something there to protect. I do not think we have done much to help ourselves out - after the much-maligned and circus driven 9/11 attack we gained allies and support. That was then - now we are hated among most and have squandered all our support with the gesture of crushing a nation no bigger than Ohio--and it was not even able to protect itself because there were no weapons. Every day I see literal Proles who never doubt for an instant what the television tells them. They never question why we are seeing what we are or what ulterior motives may exist, or consider the implications of propaganda's influence. They accept mindlessly. I wish I knew how to make people see that with a little scrutiny the whole structure of fear and paranoid thinking crumbles like the sham it is.
Maybe I'll write more later; the television is calling and I want to hear about our latest victory (sic). Oh, and I missed a dose of Prozium. It helps keep things in perspective. Or in Equilibrium you could say.
I read this and thought "ArtSem is coming!"
Well, back to my regular reading material.
Conveniently ignoring the truth does not make it go away.
