This is basically the equivalent of a Bible Belt Congressman getting busted for pederasty. Chuck Rangel, D-NY, is chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee and de facto warden of the federal tax code. He is under investigation for a very impressive stint of tax fraud. My, how our obligations inform our indulgences.
| From NYTIMES article |
The [House Ethics Committee], which conducts its proceedings in secret, began investigating Mr. Rangel this fall, after news reports that he had accepted four rent-stabilized apartments from a prominent New York City developer, failed to pay taxes on rental income from a villa he owns in the Dominican Republic and had used Congressional stationery to solicit donations for a City College of New York project to be named in his honor.
The investigation was later expanded after news reports about Mr. Rangel’s efforts to preserve a tax loophole for an oil drilling company whose chief executive pledged $1 million to the City College project and whose lobbyist had discussed legislation authorizing the tax shelter with the congressman on the day it was being considered by the Ways and Means Committee.
The ethics committee interrupted its work when Congress adjourned last month and will not resume it until Ms. Pelosi names four new Democrats to the panel to replace departing members, and the Democratic caucus votes to affirm the appointment of Ms. Lofgren, most likely later this week.
Mr. Rangel, a Democrat from Harlem, has figured prominently in developments since Congress reconvened this month. He helped shape President Obama’s economic stimulus package, and he suggested that he might once again propose a controversial measure to reinstitute a military draft.
Mr. Rangel has said he has no intention of allowing the ethics inquiry to overshadow his legislative agenda.
“There are just more important things going on right now,” he said last week through his spokesman, Matthew Beck. |
