I've heard it's supposedly going to be based in or around Captain Kirk's time.

This is a disaster waiting to happen. Loyal fans like will never accept someone besides Shatner and Nimoy playing Kirk and Spock. Please, just let the franchise die with dignity. The last movie Nemesis was simply terribly done and was the first ST movie to gross under $20 million. There have been no good creative minds in Paramount ever since Ira Steven Behr became unemployed. Maybe they could lower the price on the DS9 DVDs instead.

Never mind lacking recognisable Kirks and Spocks: how are they going to reconcile the issue of TOS sets with modern obsessions with CIG? One of the numerous reasons that Enterprise sucked so much was that the technology was clearly more sparkly and hi-tech than that of TOS.

The only way that this could work is to have no CIG in it whatsover, because the economic impetus for CIG-mania is too great to be resisted once the first programmer has been set to work.

Then again, almost all Star Trek movies have sucked since the Wrath Of Khan. Generations is the only exception I can think of; First Contact was fairly good, at least.

I'd say an explorative series (akin to TOS) in the Delta quadrant, with more emphasis on the development of minor characters than TOS. I suppose it would be somewhat like TNG, but less 80s and without Councillor Troy.

..oh yes less homages and more action and great dramatic acting to balance things off..The Borg threat has been neutralised by Capt Janeway so there are lots of rivalries among the alien species...
do you remember species Species 8472 ? I think they are the coolest!! I think they could prove useful in a future storyline, I mean Peace is rather boring....
[/quote]

I liked them a lot; they had a similar concept and vibe to the Tyranids/Genestealers of Warhammer 40K (and, thusly, Alien/Aliens/the shit films).

Carl wrote:

I don't watch sci-fi for the writer's tawdry objectivising of beautiful women. I do that tawdry objectivising without any professional help.

Carl wrote:

I think they'd be well off if they avoided long running story arcs, which were one of the many sink-holes in Enterprise. The TOS formula, while repetitive, did allow at least for a lot creative freedom; sometimes this worked ("How about... Sargon, the great gene spreader of mankind across the galaxy?") and sometimes it didn't ("let's make a planet that's like... Ancient Rome! Only more hip and happening, with Dr. Who style costumes!") and sometimes it just got silly ("Evil! White! MONKEY!").

Anything without temporal terrorists and Vulcans that don't act like Vulcans is an improvement.

Does anyone else think that DS9 could have been as good as TNG had they been on an exploratory ship? Aside from the lack of freedom in terms of movement and situations, I think that series had very strong characters, and some good concepts (like the "mirror universe"). If it wasn't for the fact that I get bored by Bajorans, I would rate it above Voyager.

Just before any further (possible) confusion takes place, I suggest you take a look at MH's profile (if you haven't already).

I liked Lister's hypothesis in Red Dwarf: mankind are an interplanetary disease, and this is why planets are so keen to keep away from Earth.

Rimmer: "So Lister, what you're saying is that you're an intergalactic pus-filled cold-sore? For once Lister, we agree."

After Rodenberry died... Star Trek slowly started to suck. But there are still the old episodes... they allways give you something to think about. particularly the early ones... they are just like gullivers travels.... only that they replaced the islands with planets and Captain Guiliver with Captain Kirk and the Liliputs with the Klingons, the Big guys (forgott what they where called) with the vulcans and the Yahoo's with the Packlets etc.

Of course some newer episodes are also great. Here are some of the newer ones wich ere also good. If you haven't done so... go watch Chain of command part 2, Remember (Voyager) , Nemesis (the Voyager Episode NOT the movie), Remember (Voyager again) and Far Beyond the Stars.

Far Beyond the Stars, DS9, was one of the best episodes I've seen. It wasn't utterly complex... it was just very human.

ja... Far beyond the stars is pretty amazing (even though i otherwise don't like ds9). It actually tells you what Star Trek is. I love the way they used the alien masks like monsters they turn in when they start beating him. They used the Cardasian masks in the same way in Chain of command (tng). In the devil in the dark (tos), is there in truth no beauty (tos), and Nemesis (Voy) and of course every old episode with mister Spock they used the alien masks in the oppsite way (making you think there is an ugly monster only to have you discover that the point of the episode was to tell you that you shouldn't judge by appearances).

@ Mephisto: have you watched patterns of force?
PS: I won't judge by appearance either, but why are you calling yourself the devil?

Totally ripped off, once they got their hands on the JMS Bible it was clear skies for the DS-9 team. B5 was written, stuided and developed first, JMS even pitched it to Paramount beforelong before Ds9 even existed as a speck of dust Amazingly straight after this meeting, Paramount managed to get DS9 developed and launched before B5 launched its pilot because they didn't have to shop around for a network like JMS and as a part of the pitch to Paramount, a copy of the "bible" for B5 was included. No formal charges of plagarism were ever filed, but even a guy without a nose can smell a rat.

Babylon 5 was better than DS9 mostly.

I am a sci-fi fan not a Trek fan but in a couple of ways Trek was generally better than B5. There was never an engineering character equivalent to Scotty on Babylon 5. Oh yeah, a space station 5 miles long with a fusion reactor operating a hyper-space jump gate and no head engineer. Tell me another one. Star Trek shows a change in human culture over 200 years. Some people accuse it of being communist but the point is thare is significant change from today. Babylon 5 looks like the same old stuff just with way cooler technology. Depending on the objective of the stories that could be a good thing but it is not truly futuristic science fiction.

Interesting that you should say that.

"Consider the vision of future human beings that Roddenberry created, particularly the way his characters behaved and the social structure in which they lived."

From http://www.stevepavlina.com/blog/2005/06/lessons-from-star-trek/
No Marketing

There’s no marketing in the Star Trek universe… no sponsors’ logos emblazoned onto the Enterprise. People select and use objects and technology because of their genuine usefulness, not because of clever sales techniques. The characters on the show are too intelligent to succumb to marketing gimmicks anyway, so today’s type of marketing wouldn’t likely be effective with such people anyway.

What About Us?

To me this is a reasonable model of how mature human beings should behave and interact with each other. Granted this is a fictional universe, but putting aside the fictional elements and the imagined technology, the human aspects are very real. It may be enormously uncommon today, but it’s certainly not impossible for individuals to behave in this manner.

I believe that what holds us back more than anything else is our social conditioning. We’re born into societies that install many values in us, values that most people never take the time to consciously challenge.

The solution is to raise our awareness and begin acting more consciously. This requires self-reflection, using our own consciousness to examine what we currently hold in our own minds. We must force our subconscious beliefs and assumptions to the surface, challenge them, and consciously decide if we wish to keep them or replace them.

In some ways the Star Trek universe reminds me of the world view Ayn Rand created in her book Atlas Shrugged. However, her characters were primarily motivated by selfishness, which Rand considered a virtue in itself. The Star Trek characters seem to be motivated by meaningful contribution. The most selfish alien race (the Ferengi) are looked down upon by the main characters, perhaps as a commentary on the way humans largely behave today.

This entire business of marketing, technology and economics is kind of a crux of what is going on with humanity and it seems to keep popping up in my life. I was a Customer Engineer for IBM in the General Systems Division. Trained on System 3's, System 32 & 34, Series 1, and misc stuff.

While I was there they introduced a system called a Datamaster 23 which replaced the 5100. I wrote two benchmark programs and tested the machines side by side. The old machine was almost twice as fast as the new one. How would that information have affected sales if distributed at the time?

One day I got off the elevator and this marketing rep picked me to use as practice for his Datamaster 23 sales pitch. So while I'm standing there wondering why he picked me for this bullsh!t I decide I'll wait it out and make his day. So when he finishes I say to him, "Have you noticed that the Datamaster 23 is slower than the 5100?" He gets this blank look on his face and I turn and walk away smiling on the outside and laughing my ass off on the inside.

I wasn't expecting him to bother me again but two weeks later he catches me waiting for an elevator and he comes up on my right side in a way I can only describe a "furtive." He leans toward me and whispers in my ear, "You know, the Datamaster 23 IS slower than the 5100." And he looks around at all of the other IBMers waiting on elevators with this almost frightened expression on his face. He looked like he was straight out of college and I gather I really burst his bubble about IBM's righteous delusions. I remember two division meetings where the branch manager go up and talked about what an ethical company IBM was. ROFL

Reading about the changes in technology since 1880 and what I have observed over my lifetime to a certain extent makes it seem like we really are living in a science fiction world. The difference between this and Star Trek is that most people hardly have a clue how anything works.

Hey! Speak for yourself! I know everything about programming computers:

It's easy. First you have to anoint the computer with scented oil, while making the proper supplications to the Machine God in binary. If done correctly, this appeases the computer's machine-spirit, which causes it to cooperate. If the preperations are not done correctly, you may offend the machine-spirit, and it will not want to talk with you. This is a major mistake that the Microsoft programmers made when programming Windows ME. They forgot to properly purify and bless their operating system before releasing it, causing thousands of copies of the angry machine-spirit to be distributed among the unfortunate populace.

Have a look at this video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0sTQgQdfsM

It's the Star Trek episode "Chain of Command". One of my favorites. Picard basicly is Winston, and some evil cardasian is trying to break his will (I love it because of the way the cardassian masks shows how the torturerer physicly transforms into a monster :-)

I haven't seen that one in over 10 years. The references to 1984 are clear. But there was another episode which was somewhat similar, Frame of Mind (TNG episode), in which it was Riker's turn to be the subject of mind-altering torture.

And while were on the subject, here's a list of some of my favorite episodes. Most of them have to with time travel, alternate universes, or pseudo-Orwellian themes.

Of course, all of the episodes involving the Borg are classics as well. But that goes without saying.

You can add Matter of Honor to the list. I believe it's the episode of TNG where Riker gets to become first officer temporarily on an officer exchange program aboard a Klingon vessel. It sheds some interesting light on Klingon culture, and I think was all-around a pretty cool episode.

I am all for them making a new Star Trek film, as long as they don't butcher the series. I loved Nemesis...even if I am one of the few. I have heard others say that the series should be allowed to die, maybe you are right, the whole "too much of a good thing..." deal. But I have always liked the Star Trek universe and I have always wanted to learn as much as possible about it. Therefore, a new movie would fall into that criteria and allow me to do that. It is going to be weird seeing a Star Trek movie without William Shatner or Patrick Stewart, if that is indeed the direction that the movies are going. I would welcome a new movie to the set, but if it doesn't meet expectations and ruins the series for me, I am going to be really pissed. Crying or Very sad
And now that we are hear...I am going to comment on a link I found between a Star Trek episode and 1984...(Pardon me if someone else has already mentioned this, I haven't read all of the previous posts.) I believe it was The Next Generation episode Chain Of Command, the Cardassians had captured Picard and were torturing him, the interrogator was having Picard look into four bright lights and was trying to make Picard believe that there were five. This is so similar to 1984 when O'Brien is trying to convince Winston to see five fingers instead of four. I believe Star Trek took that little tid bit and borrowed it from Orwell. Anyways, Picard later confides in Dianna Troi that for a second, before he was rescued, he had been convinced that there were five lights, much as Winston was finally convinced that there were five fingers. I absolutely love this episode, I wish I had it on DVD.

I'd love to see a new Star Trek movie too as long as they actually came up with a decent plot and story. Nemesis?!? Argh! You heretic! *Throws burning oil at you.*

I've always loved the Star Trek universe, too. It's remarkably diverse and adaptible... except for the ugly and stupid Pakleds.

If you have Azureus BitTorrent downloader, you can go to Isohunt.com and download all seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation for free, and I haven't gotten a virus yet, so I'd say it's rather safe.

Yep, just a few posts back in this very thread (Post #36592), and somebody posted a link to this episode on YouTube back in this post (although the video has been subsequently removed).

A CONFLICT OF SPACE POWERS- SPACE COLD WAR/WAR BY PROXY... AND HEGEMONY...

....hmm can you beat the feeling of seeing a motherfucking huge spaceship, on your 6 feet flat screen tv with the dolby surround system on with the subwoofers shaking rhythmically to the drone of the Enterprise's engines?
...you know that science fiction is meant to feed the Humanity's desire to reach for the stars and leave this planet in search of adventure......

...the Phoenix will rise once more....complete reboot in Star Trek's Dark Universe...evil Pickard, evil Rickard, demented Q...rogue Data.....will Human Heroism save the Imperial Planet Federation...

...a new villain is in order......that will create the dynamics for new character growth and development...... otherwise it is just space tourism.....

I am already looking forward to the Transformers Movie...Micheael Bay directing....action baby....
Deceptikons Attack!!!!

I just figured you out, carl. You write all your posts while rocking out to techno and electronica, don't you? Wink
