Titus, based on the play Titus Andronicus by The Master, William Shakespeare, is a movie about revenge, love, lust, and power. It incorporates incredible acting with wonderful scenery and props, costumes, and features a unique perspective of blending post-modernism with ancient Roman sets and scenery.
The movie begins with a child being rushed out of his home by a fellow Roman prior to its destruction. I haven't quite figured it out yet, what the significance was (if anyone here knows, please share!) or what it meant.
Titus, a Roman general, arrives in Rome, victorious, from his conquests in the land of the Goths. He brings prisoners, namely the Queen of the Goths, Tamora, and her three sons, as well as a Moor named Aaron. To appease the gods of Rome, he sacrifices the eldest son to his gods, despite the pleas of an anguished Tamora.
Titus Andronicus, general of Rome
Tamora, Queen of the Goths
Rome has lost its emperor to the ravages of time, and the two sons of the late Caesar vy for the throne. Titus arrives, and is offered the position of emperor, but refuses, saying it should belong to Saturninus, eldest son of the late Caesar. Saturninus is an arrogant and immature "child".
Saturninus, Caesar of Rome
Titus offers Tamora and her sons to the newly-elected Saturninus, only to find that Tamora, her sons, and Aaron are set free by Saturninus if Tamora becomes his bride. Titus' daughter, Lavinia, is wanted by Saturninus, but she is betrothed to Saturninus' brother. Lavinia flees with her fiance, and Saturninus orders Titus to bring them back. One of Titus' sons tries to stop him, being that "Lavinia is betrothed to another lawful love", but Titus, loyal to his honor, kills his own son. Saturninus changes his mind about Lavinia upon this happening, thus making it a worthless killing.
Lavinia, daughter of Titus
Tamora and Aaron secretly plot Titus' destruction of family, in the same manner Titus destroyed her own, and in a trap, Lavinia's fiance is murdered by Tamora's sons, and Lavinia is raped, and then mutilated to prevent her telling anyone what really happened. The trap is part of a larger plot in which two more of Titus' sons are convicted of the death of Lavinia's fiance wrongly, and are executed, despite Titus' beggings.
Aaron, the Moor
In short order, Titus discovers a way to have Lavinia tell him who did the killing and rape and torture of herself and her fiance, and Titus traps Tamora's sons, killing them. He then bakes a pie from their flesh, and invites Saturninus and Tamora to dinner. He tells them what he has done, and kills Tamora. He is killed by Saturninus, who is in turn killed by Titus' final remaining son.
The Empire falls into ruin after learning that the only child left from the Imperial Family is a bastard son of Aaron and Tamora, and the final sequence is just as thematic and aesthetic as the starting scenes.
While it's a bloody movie filled with gore and violence, it was wonderfully done, and quite aesthetic for anyone who appreciates good artform. _________________
