Recently, I ordered the movie adaptation from my local library, the same I first got hold of the book oddly enough.
I was slightly crest-fallen when it arrived, in its battered video box. But all my sorrows were swept away when I saw those words "Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past" scroll across the screen at the trumpet call.
I thought the Two Minutes Hate was simply inspired. Even the extras were awesome (gah! What a horrid word!) in it. "Oceania 'tis for thee" was tear-jerkingly patriotic.
The image of the hundreds of telescreens every where, even in the countryside was wonderfully disturbing (is that an oxymoron?).
All in all, brilliant acting, brilliant imagery, brilliant music, brilliant sets and brilliant music, one of the best British (thank you) films ever made. But what did you think Brothers and Sisters?
Did you think it was a faithull adaptation?
Keep it Clean, if you don't mind.

Good day and God bless.

What are you talking about, dear O Comrade Alexander?

We have to love anything that derives from Orwell The Master Himself. Very Happy And, besides, flattery and blind devotion aside, the director (whoever it was) did a great job, in my opinion. The film really captured the whole essence of 1984, and the choice of actor for Winston Smith was great, John Hurt did a great job. Two Minute of Hate did not fail my expectations, at all. It was exactly what I visualised when I was reading the book. Very awesome and rare, indeed.

Oh crap, my mp3 player just shuffled itself to ''Oceania, Tis For Thee". Uncanny.

Heh.

So it's worth a shot? I haven't seen it myself, but I've heard there's two versions.

I pretty much agree on that, the Bradford screenplay really captured the sense of hopelessness in the character and the mood of utter despair that envelopes the movie. And to think China, Germany and the Soviet Union (Italians will always be sloppy and too romantic to run an effective police state) had this form of utterly evil government. I believe there are two versions of the 1984 movie (year 1984) one with the classical music sountrack and the other with the Eurhythmics soundtrack, weird, I play the mp3's while I watching the movie with subtitles...the Eurhythmics soundtrack is very much electronic/housey/Techno-is for an album made in 1984.... the cool thing about this site, is that six degrees of separation, someone actually knows the guy who plays the face of Big Brother in the movie, now how cool is that? I am not sure whether this movie could actually be superseded by a remake ever....what is 1984 the movie and the book? A Warning to Future Generations....

Yo, how could we download it before it's too late (without installing a thing, and converting it into a great-sized WMV)

I just found the Peter Cushing 1954 version online.

Link

I had to download some "veoh" player thing which is now downloading the full film but it seems straight forward so far.

Yeah, and a most curious incident happened lately.

I was there in the school MMLC (computer room) and I watched it (downloaded, not from youtube) and then the screen freezed. Some technicians summoned me to abandon all my files (I was working on a project, y'know) and then leave immediately. I decided not to argue with Big Brother (well, he threatened to call the discipline master (aka BB) so that was sensible).

Yeah, I've always mutter "B.B is watching you" when a teacher I dislike walks past. Schools today are rather fascistic, don't you agree.
There is this incredibly pedantic teacher at my school. If a single mouse in his suite has so much as been moved then he'll dish out a detention. I only just manged to escape his wrath before!
That was a very bad day. Crying or Very sad Nothing good happened for me at any point! And I got litter duty for, of all things, throwing a wrapper at someone who had just stuffed it down the back of my shirt!
Still, I'm moving away from the point.
Has 1984 been published on DVD in Europe yet?

The movie was interesting as it was a visual perspective of somone elses that was contrasted to mine, but I think it lacked depth. Hurt played a good Winston I think, but Julia.... the nude scenes honestly scared me...

I'm watching the first part of the movie on Youtube now. Have you noticed that while the outer party people are rallying against Goldstein the inner party members in the front are just sitting down peacefully?

Both films are middling in style. The modern one did capture the whole feeling of utter doom under the whole perpetual war between the tyrannical regimes, but the book just has much more to it, probably too much to capture in a single film.

It could be seen as an expression of power and being beyond reproach. They're so utterly orthodox and powerful, they don't need to express themselves in the same way that the Outer Party does. The Two Minutes Hate is as much a trial as a catharsis.

I hate to dig up an old thread, but reading this made me feel that it was time for me to admit my deep dark secret... I've never read the book! I know, I know, how could this be? Honestly, I came upon this site a few days after watching the movie when I googled 'Newspeak Dictionary' hoping to find out more about the actual language. I was just so amazed at the idea that you could make people stop struggling for their freedom by simply removing words like 'freedom' or 'revolt' from their language. I must admit that I was disappointed to find that there was no Newspeak Dictionary here (or anywhere for that matter). However, what I did find has proven to be much more interesting. And I guess I just never got around to getting a hold of the book. Anyway, I just needed to admit my shame to you all. So now you know how truly unworthy I am. Crying or Very sad

The same as you, comrade. Laughing
