Jennifer Government

The world of Jennifer Government

In this book, free enterprise now rules almost all of what constitues as the US territory (green on map). You're last name is that of the company you work for (John Nike), or the company that runs you're school (Hayley McDonald's). Corperations have little but the most heinous crimes to worry about, unless they attack their competitors (which they leave up to their Guerrilla Marketing Department). The government's budget is so small they can only start investigations through charity from people, since taxes are illegal. Most "enforcement" is done by hired thugs, The NRA or The Police, both private corperations and hotly traded stocks. And corperate ethics are replaced by simple economics: is it going to make us money or lose us money?

The book was made more for entertainment than political comentary, though there is enough in it to make a good discussion. Its not as in depth as 1984, but its still a wonderful book thats also a quick read. Its a view of the world gone to the corperations.

NationStates
The author also created a game to help sell the book (which is how I learned about it. The game NationStates allows you to run your nation as you see fit: naming it, creating its currency and national animal, and deciding its fate by your coices on debates that come up. Heres an example from my nation Fallen Earth:

Quote:
Nazi Sympathizers Plan Rally
The Issue

Far-right-wing Nazi supporters plan to stage a rally in the city center tomorrow, giving voice to their violent, racist views.

The Debate

1. "Frankly, I'm appalled that the government can even consider allowing this travesty to go ahead," says prominent Jewish banker Dave Gutenberg. "We can't let these animals broadcast their message of hate. Surely Fallen Earth is too civilized for that."

2. "It's exactly because we're civilized that we must let the demonstration proceed," says free speech campaigner Dave Hamilton. "We may not like what they have to say, but in this society, people have the right to argue whatever political view they want, no matter how hateful, selfish, or stupid it is."

You're choice in these items affect the nation in several ways: on Civil Rights, Economic, and Political Freedoms scales (which then affect you're nation's catagory; my 2 nations are Capitalist Paradise and Anarchy Very Happy ); you're % of tax (from 0 to 100) and type (flat or more taxes for wealthy), crime rates, and the ecological standing of your nation.

Its very interesting and a fun waste of time. Plus, you can join the UN they have there (which has 38,010 member nations) and vote on a whole slew of resolutions that come up. These resolutions have a real affect on your nation, and so votes matter. You can also go on the forum and role-play your nation with others.

The game is very fun, and with 131,903 nations there is probably something there for you to do and someone for you to talk to. It is very interesting some of the things you will find out by working on your nation.

Ah yes, Nationstates. Many a period in Standard Grade Computing was wasted creating the next dystopia. I still go on occasionally (my most recent creation was the Armed Republic of 80's Action Movies, with the national motto being the tagline from Commando- "Somewhere, somehow, someone's going to pay!"

Jennifer Government is, in my opinion, one of the best dystopias of our time. Of course, because of the humourous nature of the book, it isn't as disturbing as say, 1984 or Under The Iron Heel (Jack London).
