Can't do a review yet but I am looking forward to this one.

Quote:
Cameron has now completed Avatar, a story of an ex-Marine who finds himself thrust into hostilities on an alien planet called Pandora, filled with exotic life forms.

As an Avatar- a human mind in an alien body- he finds himself torn between two worlds in a desperate fight for his own survival and that of its indigenous people.

I keep my hopes high and my expectations low. The risk is that there will be interesting special effects, but a thin and not very innovative story. A comment I heard which I unfortunately have to agree with: It looks like a computer game.

It partly depends on your perspective.

There are scenes with futuristic helicopter gunships that remind me of pictures from Vietnam. I clearly remember sitting in front of the television watching a lottery wondering if I was going to win an all expense payed vacation to lovely Vietnam. Of course they didn't have first person shooter computer games back then.

It was the REAL THING!

psik

PS - How many Vietnam vets came back with Vietnamese wives? Of course a 9 foot blue alien woman would not fit in to the American way of life very well. Having to duck through doorways all of the time would get old real fast. ROFL

Just as there are four types of people based on mentality, there are four types of literature and film. There is nonfiction based on real/nonfiction, nonfiction based on not real/fiction, fiction based on fiction and fiction based on nonfiction. Which is it? This movie definitely needs promotion alright.

OK, I saw Avatar 3-D yesterday.

I didn't see it at an IMAX theater but I was surprisingly impressed by the 3-D effects. A few months ago I was at a computer show for vendors and watched a 3-D demonstration using electronic glasses that blinked polarized lenses as shutters. Whatever method was used in Avatar used glasses but not electronic ones. The effect however was as good as I recall seeing at that computer show and the screen was WAY BIGGER.

The movie was like a combination of Vietnam, Dances with Wolves, Aliens and Fern Gully.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferngully

Heavy on the Fern Gully.

http://www.thedailytube.com/video/20451/james-cameron-presents-fern-gully

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wfn2_7_AlPg&feature=youtube_gdata

It totally blows away Star Trek which had nothing to say and beats it for effects. I am going to go again soon which I haven't done for any movie since The Matrix. That was 10 years 9 1/2 months ago.

I just watched this yesterday with my friends.
Yes, the 3d effects are indeed incredible and could be the new standard for today's
d animation. It was a fantastic movie..again, by James Cameron.

Instead, we are going to list some possible influences from obscure and even forgotten classic science fiction sources that came to our mind while watching “Avatar” – there is no telling if James Cameron read any of them or was influenced by any particular tradition, but it was a good fun to find out and remember the jolly good reads that they are (see if you can remember any of the stories mentioned below, or if you can think of other ones)

You realize of course that this is illegal and Big Brother will have us shot if he catches us?

http://www.vo2ov.com/Avatar-2009-Proper-TS-Sample-New-Print-Ninja-Assassin-300MB_411401.html

The subtitles are in Russian though. At least I think it's Russian.

My Russian is REAL BAD!

But there is a peculiarity at the end which is different from the movie. I did see it legally, TWICE.

The 3D CGI on the BIG SCREEN is worth it.
