List of the IDA's Top 25 Documentaries:
http://www.documentary.org/content/top-25-docs
Which are your favorites and least favorite?
Are there docs you would insert into the list???
For the record my fav from the list is #14 Koyaanisqatsi (1983);
but I have not seen most on the list. I plan on watching #9 The Fog of War (2003) shortly.
I would insert "No End in Sight" in place of "Fahrenheit 9/11", as it focused on the lead up to and execution of the war... not standing around the Saudi embassy to come up with inferred criticism that amounted to nothing. _________________ "Money obfuscates truth for aggravating periods of time." |

I don't typically watch documentaries, but I have seen, on that list, the two Moore movies: Bowling for Columbine, and Fahrenheit 911. The only other documentary movie I can think of having seen is Jesus Camp.
I think Bowling for Columbine was a great movie because he wasn't saying anything that I know was ridiculous or untrue (that I know of), and he let the viewer think about what is wrong in our society without putting forth his own views.
I saw Fahrenheit 911 a long time ago, and although it was interesting, there were things he said that were absolutely ridiculous and untrue. One of the things I have thought about from time to time when I recall the movie is his thoughts on our dependency on Saudi oil, and how if the Saudis withdraw investment, finances, and resources from us, we'd collapse. He didn't seem to realize it's a two-way street: if the Saudis were ever stupid enough to do that, their own economy would collapse.
Jesus Camp was a good documentary and I'm surprised it's not on the list. It concerns an American fundamentalist Christian "kid's" camp in the Dakotas (I don't remember if it was North or South), told in their own words. The people doing the documentary do not speak and simply give the fundamentalists almost total screen-time (with some time by local radio hosts who speak against the fundamentalists) to make fools of themselves by themselves without any interference. _________________

They should have added a short description for each.
I'm somewhat of a docu-holic. I've downloaded about 30gb of documentaries from thebox.bz in the past 2 months alone. Here are a few of my favs (complete with descriptions, and torrent links):
- Jonathan Miller - Rough History of Disbelief - The history of atheism (wikipedia: Atheism: A Rough History of Disbelief)
- Brian Flemming - The God Who Wasn't There - Arguments for the "Jesus myth". Some of the facts may be a little off, and the ending is a bit of a drag, but still worthwhile. (Wikipedia: The God Who Wasnt There)
- Grass - History Of Marijuana - The History of Prohibition, narrated by Woody Harrelson. (Wikipedia: Grass (film))
- The Yes Men - The Yes Men are a group of culture jamming activists who practice what they call "identity correction" by pretending to be powerful people and spokespersons for prominent organizations. They create and maintain fake websites similar to ones they want to spoof, and then they accept invitations received on their websites to appear at conferences, symposia, and TV shows (Wikipedia: The Yes Men)
- Orwell Rolls in his Grave - Had to mention this one, this being a George Orwell website and all. (Wikipedia: Orwell Rolls in His Grave)
- The Great Global Warming Swindle - argues against the "scientific consensus" on global warming. (wikipedia: The Great Global Warming Swindle)
- Who Killed the Electric Car? - explores the creation, limited commercialization, and subsequent destruction of the battery electric vehicle in the United States, specifically the General Motors EV1 of the 1990s. (Wikipedia: Who Killed the Electric Car)
- The Human Animal - Observations of the human species in the wild.
- Secrets Of The Mind - I discussed this one back in this thread
- James Burke - Connections - an interdisciplinary approach to the history of science and invention and demonstrates how various discoveries, scientific achievements, and historical world events built off one another in an interconnected way to bring about particular aspects of modern technology. Friggin Awesome. (Wikipedia: Connections (TV series))
- You Are What You Eat - Ok, it's not really a documentary per se. It's more like a educational reality show. But it's on the BBC, so that makes it a documentary in my book. Basically, the show is about a health-nazi who teases fat people and makes them eat broccoli and miso soup for 8 weeks. Loads of fun. (Wikipedia: You Are What You Eat)

#6 An Inconvenient Truth (2006) NOT SEEN

#11 Super Size Me (2004) SEEN
#12 Dont Look Back (1967) SEEN, OWNED
#13 Salesman (1968) SEEN
#14 Koyaanisqatsi (1983) SEEN, but the extent to which this can be called a documentary is very much debatable.
#15 Sherman's March (1986) SEEN.
#16 Grey Gardens (1976) SEEN
#17 Capturing the Friedmans (2003) NOT SEEN
#18 Born into Brothels (2004) NOT SEEN

Surprisingly, with my interest in the music and culture of the 60s, the Woodstock one was one of the few movies on the list I haven't seen. _________________

Same here. Unsure of my digital total, but over the years I've recorded a number of documentaries with my computer (focusing on Frontline). I'm guessing VCD is frowned upon? But I do have some rare stuff, like a TVO documentary on Blade Runner. The sign up terms specify you have rights to the video, but it seems users ignore that requirement freely?
I saw that by chance on Monday, it was great!
Especially when it regurgitated my father's (weed makes you unmotivated) line;
he happened to be watching it with me.

*two thumbs up* Shutting down the WTO, genius!
A buddy of mine sent me this article recently:
http://www.hawaiireporter.com/story.aspx?3bdc515f-70d4-4583-8af5-eb517991319f
I found it interesting, but emphasized human impacts do need to be understood;
so that we do not exacerbate natural climate trends / disasters.
I intended to see that, but the more I heard the less interesting it seemed. Sure there was an obvious lack of vision and drive by GM; but at the same time (at least for the EV1), the market was too limited for their horizon.

The book is one of my favorites, I really wish they gave it to junior high school to read to help them understand their behavior, and adult behavior for that matter. _________________ "Money obfuscates truth for aggravating periods of time." |

I forgot one....
Zeitgeist: The Movie - "a 2007 documentary film exposé on contemporary religion, government, and global economics. Focal points of the film are the Jesus myth hypothesis, the attacks of 9/11, and the US Federal Reserve Bank. A number of conspiracy theories and staggering world visions are presented." (source: wikipedia - Zeitgeist, the Movie)
Zeitgeist: Addendum - "a 2008 documentary film produced by Peter Joseph, is a continuation of the film Zeitgeist, the Movie.[1] The film discusses the Federal Reserve System in the United States, the CIA, corporate America, other government and financial institutions, and even religion, concluding that they are all corrupt institutions detrimental to humanity and are in need of replacement." (source: wikipedia - Zeitgeist: Addendum)
They occasionally stray into conspiracy-land, but on the whole they make for a nice little "red pill".
And while the following is not exactly a "documentary", it certainly can be "enlightening":
Beyond Belief: Science, Reason, Religion & Survival
Beyond Belief: Enlightenment 2.0
Beyond Belief 3: Candles in the Dark
The 1st series was great, the 2nd was a bit of a let-down but still had a few good moments, and the 3rd is currently downloading. _________________ "The Aim of an Argument ... should not be victory, but progress." - Joseph Joubert (1754-1824)

That torrent sucked.
Luckily, "somebody" took the time download all 48 flash files from google video, convert them to DivX AVIs, and upload a torrent to the Pirate Bay.

Torrent: BBC - The Power of Nightmares - Part 1+2+3
| From Wikipedia: The Power of Nightmares |
The Power of Nightmares, subtitled The Rise of the Politics of Fear, is a BBC documentary film series, written and produced by Adam Curtis. Its three one-hour parts consist mostly of a montage of archive footage with Curtis's narration.
The films compare the rise of the Neo-Conservative movement in the United States and the radical Islamist movement, making comparisons on their origins and claiming similarities between the two. More controversially, it argues that the threat of radical Islamism as a massive, sinister organised force of destruction, specifically in the form of al-Qaeda, is a myth perpetrated by politicians in many countries—and particularly American Neo-Conservatives—in an attempt to unite and inspire their people following the failure of earlier, more utopian ideologies.
The first part of the series explains the origin of Islamism and Neo-Conservatism.....

I've already got the entire series on my hard drive, and it's also on youtube, if you know where to look. _________________
