Let the Mac Bashing Begin! (HP laptop here)

From Dailytech
A new study has some humorous comments at Mac owners' expense, but reveals some serious market trends

Mac users and Mac-loving analysts often use phrases like “the halo-effect” to explain increased sales of Mac computers and OS X due to iPods and iPhones. Now, the stock market site The Street has created a humorous video analysis that offers up a new explanation for this and more commercial phenomena -- the "snob"-effect.

In the video, The Street says that on average Mac users surveyed were discovered to be “self centered, arrogant, conceited” and truly "snobs". The site says this has many real commercial ramifications, so all jokes aside, the "snob"-factor warrants serious attention.

Mac users, apparently concerned with self-image, were found to buy tooth-whitening products at a far greater rate than PC users. Mac users are also more likely to visit Starbucks, buy organic food, and own hybrid cars. Furthermore, Mac users buy on average 5 new pairs of sneakers a year, well above the average for non-users.

Mac users prefer notebooks to desktops, station wagons to SUVs. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Mac users prefer "green" products, even at a higher cost. Perhaps more surprisingly, Mac users are quite law abiding and are more likely than not to pay for music -- perhaps more due to the popularity of iTunes than their moral inclinations. Mac users are more satisfied with their purchase than PC users.

Interestingly, people surveyed with an "open personality" were found to be 60% more likely to buy a Mac. Some of the more esoteric observations on Mac users character are flattering, others aren't. Mac users were found to be more liberal, socially and politically. Mac users are also less modest and more assured of their own superiority.

The interesting part about The Street's video, is that while obvious poking a bit of fun at the Mac crowd, it does illustrate some practical market trends that can be exploited for the benefit of more effective advertising and marketing to the growing crowd of Mac, iPod, and iPhone "snobs".

Hopefully there won't be too many hurt feelings, and await a possible comment from Apple Inc. CEO Steve Jobs.

I'm amused by the comment on shoes especially. Really, who needs 5 pairs of shoes a year?

The only two guys with a Mac laptop I know are pretty proud of themselves , while I was wondering for what. Everyone likes them and stuff..... sooo annoying.

I-Pod users here are those who arrogantly use them every free minute they have.

I think the reason why I am interested in the I-Phone is the commercial is so good and has a nice music it really makes me wanna buy it ( Dolce & Gabbana has the same effect on me ) , but this time I guess I wont give in.

Who fucking cares, honestly? I've used macs and windows and unless your job involves interacting with computers to a degree 99% of users never experience, it's all preference.

No one needs to conduct a study to find that mac users are more snobbish. Macs are marketed as "luxury" computers, of course the users are going to be more snobby. I bet people who drive more expensive better looking cars are more snobby than people who drive normal cars, too.

Maybe all this really tells us is that mac users have higher incomes... more money to spare on stupid things.

I think I'll stick with my multi-platform Linux OSes whenever possible and keep WinXP for gaming, thank you. In terms of hardware, a Mac is no different than a PC nowadays, except that it's hermetically sealed, all integrated into one package and a bit more aesthetically friendly (hey, sounds like a standard laptop...). I'm a hardcore gamer anyway, and that comes with the obligatory "build your own system" ethic, so I want to be able to reuse my parts from computer to computer.

In terms of software, I like the UNIX basis of Mac OS, and because I'm such a CLI (command line interface) freak, I do feel somewhat at home there, but of course, there are certain interface issues which really make me think that a Macintosh computer would NOT be appropriate for whatever I do on the computer. They mostly refer to the GUI.

In closing, I'm not strictly opposed to using Macs, but I wouldn't buy one. I prefer my hacked-together desktop system and my laptop that's running an operating system it wasn't designed for.

I dont't really see the appeal of MacOS to be honest. Functionally speaking you are basically buying an expensive, mediocre linux build with a bunch of proprietary baggage. Given current adoption mac is only going to beat linux compatibility-wise on apple software, and they don't really have any killer apps. You still need a windows build of some sort if you want blanket compatibility, so linux + windows still appears to be the logical solution.

I think the whole "mac culture" thing extends beyond income. Buying a mac is buying into a brand image, mac users are the stylish young people who think creatively spend all days in coffee shops and buy organic free trade free range columbian black hen egg muffins with ethically produced hollandaise sauce. The distinctive white headphone cord of the ipod was more than a helpful guide for muggers, it was a statement "I'm a mac user! I'm part of the mac culture! I buy into the mac philosophy!".

Before it was just the computing press and the chronically lonely who went to producer technology previews (mostly because they are almost entirely fabrication) look at the queue for a steve jobs presentation. Consumers lining up like it was a rock concert to hear the head of the Mac movement tell them how cool they are and how much cooler they will be when they give him some more money. I'm probably being overly dramatic but all this fuss over mac culture is, in my opinion, an example of consumer capitalism at its most annoying extremes.

Tell me when we find out something we didn't know. 99% of mac users I know are extremely arrogant. I've been called a faggot by more of them than I wish to count.

Some of these, though, are quite strange. Mac users also lick Gore's nutsack. Good to know. And, of course they're more satisfied with their purchases. They're fanboys, pure and simple.

I'm not against Macs or Apple, but I fucking hate Mac fanboys. I don't really favor Apple, either. I'm on my... fifth iPod. Counting all the replacements I've sent this thing through. This is the second I purchased.
