I've now listed (details to come later) all essays, stories, projects, and synopses of great substance posted on this forum, totalling 158. If you have any suggestions, please let them be known here.
I've additionally make the attempt to be impartial and choose those with actual substance, not just ones I like. Now that the list is complete, if you feel I've missed something, again, let me know here.
One final note, to help expedite matters, if you have written and essays here on this forum, you may post the name of the essay, a summary, and the url which it can be located. Thanks.
Again, I emphasize I'd like people participating, so don't be shy.
If any of your threads have been mentioned above in any of the specific libraries, you may write out a description of your thread so I can create a description section for each entry. Thanks.
I will change the style of "essays" when I feel less exhausted.
Essays
Here for the first time is a complete list of essays and one poem contest writen on this forum. My criteria for listing was rather vague, but I managed to come up with a rule or two:
1. Under no circumstances may any thread written by rats be listed
2. Has to have sufficient size
3. Has to have sufficient substance
4. Preferrably the original post
After coming up with that criteria, I've listed a total of 93 essays. If you wish to add something, simply make a post requesting I do so. It's more than likely I missed out on something important, so let me know!
A Discourse on Beauty
sorianofan
http://forums.newspeakdictionary.com/viewtopic.php?t=1850
This is a socratic dialogue that seeks to prove (1) God's existence, (2) the Good's existence, (3) the truth of Beauty as more than a mere metaphysical speculation but a quasi-tangible quality, and (4) how the reflection of the preceding overall reflects upon the greatness of God's existence.
A Discourse on the Meaning of Life
sorianofan
http://forums.newspeakdictionary.com/viewtopic.php?t=2015
Dionysus and Perri, our buddies duking it out in A Discourse on Beauty, get into another cat fight disputing what is the good life. The overall argument is that the here and now is important and enjoyable, and that living a good life must be pursued with this in mind. Furthermore, it denounces the fear of death.
Are Blacks Subject to Racism That Hurts Them Economically?
sorianofan
http://forums.newspeakdictionary.com/viewtopic.php?t=1605&start=0
This inflamatory rant argues against affirmative action by citing the fact that black immigrants do much better economically than resident blacks in America. It is asserted that immigrants' work ethic is the reason they do much better, and thus affirmative action is not a just or useful response to American blacks' economic proiblems.
The Incoherence of Philosophy
sorianofan
http://forums.newspeakdictionary.com/viewtopic.php?t=2508
This "treatise" argues that epistemology as we know it is bunk, because we try to understand it using rational processes that are merely invented, making anything within their arbitrary rules "true." The fact that we try measuring and knowing anything at all confirms the existence of "truth," outside ourselves, but philosophy does not lead us to it.

Here for the first time is a complete list of major synopses off this forum. My criteria for listing was rather vague, but I managed to come up with a rule or two:
1. It has to be at least 3 medium-sized paragraphs
2. It has to have substance
3. It has to be a synopsis of a movie or a book or a television show (games are not allowed)
4. Under no circumstances may any thread written by rats be listed
After coming up with that criteria, I've listed a total of 19 synopses. If you wish to add something, simply make a post requesting I do so. It's more than likely I missed out on something important, so let me know!

My first section
Acebrock
The rough draft of Acebrock's novel's first section, which is set in the US sortly after a terrorist attack, where the people's freedoms are disappearing and they live in a state of fear.
Titan - a[n uncompleted] novel.
Comrade Mephistopheles
Set in a world in which history has been forgotten and time lost, a Brave New society emerges in which emotion is abolished and machines dream of the day they will be free.
Two Very Short Stories I wrote
sorianofan
These stories briefly touch on two entirely different subjects. One is a pseudo-anthropological view of the origin of organized religion, arguing that religion has arisen from people with a vested interest in distributing "knowledge" for material gains. The other argues that America is heading towards a Communist system that will, ironically, reinslave blacks.

I think my review of Richard Dawkins' Doco The Root of all Evil could be considered worthy of the list, although it hasn't gotten any replies (apart from my addition of part 2) and I didn't indent each entry, since I hardly ever indent except for different sections. [/url] _________________

Listed here are threads of essays, projects, and synopses by author. A notable exception is rats, who is permanently banned from this Library listing because I really have no wish to add pieces of shit to something like this Library. Another notable exception to the styles above is that I do not provide descriptions here. It would take too much time to update if I had to fly between posts updating each description when someone adds or wishes to change it.
Without further ado, I present Newspeak Dictionary Forums' first ever essay listing by author.

First, very good work. It's good for the forum and quite thoughtful to do, because the rest of us are too lazy. I hope to have a book-length novelette I am writing with my brother completed by sometime this summer (I need to figure out whether it is something that will be published by a company) and a soon to be published historical work of mine in six months or so. The newspeakdictionary library will grow until it burns down like Alexandria!
Anyway, here are the brief synopsis of works of mine:
A Discourse on Beauty
-This is a socratic dialogue that seeks to prove (1) God's existence, (2) the Good's existence, (3) the truth of Beauty as more than a mere metaphysical speculation but a quasi-tangible quality, and (4) how the reflection of the preceding overall reflects upon the greatness of God's existence.
A Discourse on the Meaning of Life
-Dionysus and Perri, our buddies duking it out in A Discourse on Beauty, get into another cat fight disputing what is the good life. The overall argument is that the here and now is important and enjoyable, and that living a good life must be pursued with this in mind. Furthermore, it denounces the fear of death.
Are Blacks Subject to Racism That Hurts Them Economically?
-This inflamatory rant argues against affirmative action by citing the fact that black immigrants do much better economically than resident blacks in America. It is asserted that immigrants' work ethic is the reason they do much better, and thus affirmative action is not a just or useful response to American blacks' economic proiblems.
The Incoherence of Philosophy

The fact that we try measuring and knowing anything at all confirms the existence of "truth," outside ourselves, but philosophy does not lead us to it.

The other argues that America is heading towards a Communist system that will, ironically, reinslave blacks.

Unfortunately, I'm not currently counting threads as essays for self-explanatory reasons: they're meant to be humorous, largely. Of course some aren't, but that's purely subjective, and whether a point is made, I don't feel a real essay should be written in A form. Since I made this Library, those are my arbitrary rules. Sorry. =/
Sorianofan is currently in the process of publishing 2 scholarly works (one on the existence class-driven aspects of black Progressivism and another on Al Ghazali and Pico della Mirandola), and co-writing a third work with his brother which is intended to be a comical look into an individual's descent into hell.
Let me elaborate.
First, 2 are articles, thus in the microsoft word 25 page range. One is currently on ice in the editing process for Phi Alpha Theta, and I'll probably pick that back up in the 2nd week of May when the Spring Semester ends. This article goes against the present historical consensus that argues black Progressives, unlike white Progressives, were motivated by making their race look respectable instead of trying to inculcate working class blacks with middle class values. Thus, I argue that black Progressives, like white Progressives, were largely motivated by class.
Another article, which is far more ground breaking, I am not going to give too many specifics on until it is in the editing process for one of the journals I am looking to get published in. Essentially, to my own and my professors' (the one who worked with me and others who helped) excitement, it will change the way we think of renaissance humanism and its most famous writer, Pico della Mirandola. It's the sort of thing that might actually change some history books (though, unlikely at the high school level because they are so backward...but as nice "multi-cultural" perspective may gain currency.)
Lastly, I'm working on a novella with my brother (who does not post here, but plans to add wiki articles under my name, so you'll probably come across some of his writing in time). The novella, tentatively titled "Let's Go to Hell," is about a typical high school aged moron who...goes to hell. I aim it to be about 80 pages and I hope to get it published, because I want certain implicit theological ideas to be disseminated. So far, I (or we) am about one third done. Expect it in the forum by this summer, so if it is rejected by publishers, it would serve to inflate my blessed word count (jk.)
Anyway, the book is not "heady," like my somewhat sophisticated posts. It is written very simply, if not outright poorly, because it is a 12th grader writing in first person. The intended audience would be middle schoolers and high schoolers, despite the sex, drug use, and curse words. Furthermore, dialogue in the book is in a pseudo play format, so the book can be read really fast (and it leaves more to the imagination how the lines are being delivered.) Thus, it's designed for someone to open up 1 minute before class begins.
My fear is (if it is published) that 1. it gets me fired from a teaching job (so I'll use a pen name), because teenagers engaging in sexual acts is not "appropriate" for teachers to write about in their spare time--even if the purpose of the work is to encourage them not to engage in acts they already do. Parents seem to forget when they were teenagers and when they were smoking drugs, taking it up the ass, etcetera. 2. The audience would be a goth-like crowd or the dumb teenagers would think hell is a cool place (the main character gets to hang out with "loki" (satan) and enjoy world pleasures, like fucking his "demon-chicks." 3. As you can infer from the preceding, the book is misogynist. It is a book about white boys doing white boy things. Its not supposed to be an egalitarian or deep sort of book. 4. The humor can fall totally flat. For example:
Setting is in hell, James (the protagonist) is in satan's (Loki's) office discussing his sexual prospects:
Quote:
Loki: Remembuh James, with that blue armband you have the privilege to do anything you wish. Anything.
Me: You mean have sex?
I jumped right on it. I was now thinking, “Fuck it, I am in hell I might as well enjoy myself.”
Loki: Yeah man! Go for it! Have fun! Fuck my demon-chicks ‘n shit! Have at it!
Me: Well sure! But, will I get them pregnant and make half-human children and shit?
Loki: Well, no. Only devils can have children with devils.
Me: You mean like you?
Loki: Well no, I don’t have any junk.
Me: Well, the regular devils didn’t have dicks too. They just have butt-cheeks.
Loki: It’s hell, uh, don’t think too hard about shit like this.
Another section describes how "efficient" hell is under the pretext that the protagonist hasn't eaten for days:
Quote:
Hell is not as bad as it was cracked up to be. Despite the pain and torture I have witnessed, my favor with Loki put me in… a favorable position. I loved eating with Loki. I already told you of how we wined and dined, but as a few days passed Loki paid less attention to me. I became hungry, because I haven’t ate since our dinner. I had an extreme hunger (for food) that even sex couldn’t cure. Since it was hell, I thought, maybe I was going to suffer by eternal starvation. I was in Loki’s office at the time and I started to talk to him.
Me: Loki, I am starving. Do we all starve in hell?
Loki: Well, uh, you see those two guys eating each other over theuh.
I looked out the office window and witnessed two men, seemingly wrestling each other in order to continue consuming the other.
Me: I mean real food, I would never eat another person!
Loki: You are going to be heuh for a while, no one eva knows what they are capable of!
Me: So you are telling me I am going to starve for the next million years?
Loki: Well, I don’t eat that often. But, if you are hungry and you want to eat again, ya have to eat at the Hell-Cafeteria and shit.
Me: Cafeteria? You mean regular people are served food down here?
Loki: Yeah, you want to see?
Me: Sure, I guess I have enough time.
Loki: Just follow the long lines of people, they are all waiting for something to eat.
Me: Why can’t you just show me!
Loki: I’m a buseh man you know. Runnin’ Hell ain’t easeh, so many sinnas so little time!
(The phone rings)
Loki: What do you mean we are short on brimstones, don’t we have room in the budget? We really need those brimstones and shit, you tell God that it needs to share some of the wealth. These sinnuhs are havin’ too good a time, the only way it can be worse is if we have more brimstones. Tell him that. Yeah. I’ve got guys working fulltime mining that shit and I don’t know how much longuh I can keep that trade deficit with heaven goin’. Okay. Yeah, that makes sense. Tell God we’ll redouble our efforts. Oh yeah, don’t get me started on the sulfur shortage!
Loki then put his hand on the phone and said to me, “See I have important shit to do, go eat something, I’ll see ya later.”
Here's a conversation that describes how people become cannibals in hell:
Quote:
During this, I noticed the woman behind me talking to a man near what looked like cooked meat. They had pretty nice food on their trays, like fried shrimp, grilled chicken, steamed vegetables, you know nice food. They were picking at their food at their trays while on line.
Man: You know, I can’t stand when people eat the human meat, it’s disgusting! I have been here for one-hundred years and I never ate that shit!
Woman: You never have? You should try it!
Man: No man, it’s sick!
Woman: No really. It’s not that bad! It’s not like you will be sent to hell again for it!
Man: You know what? You’re right! You only die once! Ha ha! (He takes a bite) Not bad! (He then pours human au-jois onto his meat.)
I think it's fucking funny, but probably only 2 people find it funny. The humor is pretty dry, it makes more sense within the context of the book, or at least that is what I think. _________________ Luke 6:37:

Hey hey let's go! Getting in a fight!
The important thing is to protect my balls!
I am badass, so let's fighting...
Let's fighting love! Let's fighting love!
This song is a little stupid
It doesn't make any sense
English is all fucked up
But that's okay, we do it all the time!
Hey, anyways. The idea is okay, but it's too full of overly dry humor. I would encourage such an intellectual guy like you could put in a bit more philosophical issues. I think of The Screwtape Letters by CS Lewis, where a senior demon talks to a newcomer on how to mislead people away from God (okay, I hate Lewis but I'm just giving suggestions).
Great book ideas, though! Keep it up! _________________

Thanks for the response. It's actually complete, going through a process of editting for a few weeks, and then I'm looking for a book agent (which there might be some connections my mother may be able to work, because she's in the business.) I would like to get it out soon afterward, where I would then post a free (and uneditted version) here. I'm nixing from the final version an entire chapter, judged to be too extreme due to the rampid amount of sex among young people in it...too extreme for a book about Hell apparently.
The book actually approaches several issues, though because I take into account the fact it is written for 13-18 year olds, metaphors and philosophical issues don't quite smack you in the face (until parts of the end.) The rest of everything else is much more subtle, such as why people are assholes in Hell, why Hell has shortages and other inefficiencies, why Loki is such an idiot, why Hell seems like a crappier version of Earth...things relatively easy to get, but get to theological points I have now spent 2 years studying. I absolutely savage youth culture and popular culture without letting on to it, which I like. You guys will be able to see it relatively soon. I think, read in its entirity (the beginning develops characters and is more slapstick) orients one into the humor and pace of the book. I don't think excerpts do it justice.
Of course, I'm it's author, so why would I say otherwise?!?
____
Edit: Update. The book is complete and has been past it's final edits. I'll be meeting with book agent, God willing, on June 26th...as long as neither of us die or something else in the meantime. _________________ Luke 6:37:

I'd like to put this descriptor under "The New Challenge" (those of you who have read it might remember it) - "War has its challenges, harsh and violent ones, but the post-war period brings its own trials, some of which can be as difficult as any that war can muster." _________________ "Rejection of technology ruins a good mind." - RAK
