Anyone have any interesting resolutions for this new year?

We don't usually do new year's resolutions at my house, but here are some things.
1) I intend to start cross-dressing [Primarily in schoolgirl uniforms], especially after not shaving for a few weeks (like this) and often while lip-synching to Leonard Cohen songs. (Certainly an interesting resolution, innit?)
2) I will finally get a complete archive of Beavis and Butthead, complete with videos and cut scenes.
3) I will use the exclamation "Sweet!" more, primarily to annoy my mother.
4) I will finally meet Comrade Acrimony.
5) I will start doing live performances. (sometimes incorporating resolution No. 1).
6) I will finish my novel.

Current list of resolutions:

1) Learn enough of C, C++ and the Allegro game programming library to code a decent game.

2) Get more sleep - I'll be ruined physically if I don't.

3) Send in Of Unfortunate Circumstances into the college literary magazine; try to get it published.

Things I want to do, but which are secondary to the level of "resolutions":

1) Learn the Python programming language.

2) Rewrite the currently existing sections of Against the Odds, working to the principles of brevity in my writing.

3) Get back into writing The Fall. Yes, I know it's a pile of crud, but it's just floating there ready to be continued.

Allegro? Haven't heard. C++ is shit, compiles terribly. I hate low-level languages.

If C++ is so shit, then why does most of the games programming world use it, along with a decent amount of systems programmers? There are more and better C++ compilers than there are for almost any other language. C++ is platform-independent and isn't tied into any proprietary applications. Java's Virtual Machine is written in C++, which means that unless you use the GCC Java compiler, Java is dependent on C++.

Low-level languages are machine code and assembly. C and C++ are more accurately termed "mid-level", if not high-level, and low- and mid-level languages have advantages over higher-level languages that can't be ignored.

Of course in low - or mid - you get to micromanage (if im not mistaken), but it's more of my ignorance than pure shittiness.

It's one of the advantages. Another is that the code generally runs faster than higher-level languages - systems programming was thought, until the advent of C, to be a problem for assembly language only.

Just a reason why anybody who actually considers C and C++ to be inherently shit is, IMNSHO, wrong:

http://www.simson.net/ref/ugh.pdf

Now, at first glance, and for those who haven't used Unix or who have used it in the past, this would seem to be a valid list of complaints. I don't believe so, especially today. Among the problems with this list of complaints are these: the fact that whenever people had to program anything in the Macintosh in the past, they actually had to use Unix environments; the fact that Mac OS X is now based on Unix (in fact, it is a UNIX); the fact that Windows is several times more bloated than X Windows could ever have hoped to be; and this problem, specifically relating to the C++ argument:

These people programmed in Lisp. Not forgetting that Emacs, my text editor of choice, is mostly programmed in Lisp, I will say this: Lisp is a toy. A very good toy, capable of a lot more than many programming languages, but a toy nonetheless.

The artificial intelligence project failed, and as Dennis Ritchie states in the Anti-Foreword, the carcasses of the Lisp Machines and the TOPS mainframes are rotting in the ground, while Unix lives today in the form of Solaris and Mac OS X, and its legacy is continued by the Unix-like Linux and BSD systems.

(BTW, the Hello World program no longer makes a 300K image - it's more like 10K, little bigger than the C implementation. The cause of this inefficiency was unoptimised compilers.)

Then what language(s?) would you suggest as a better alternative for today's application and video game programming? I know I've always held C++ in high esteem as a language to look up to and learn some day. I plan to stick to it, but am curious as to your thoughts.

Which reminds me, I've got a project on Lisp and The Artificial Intellgence Project due soon, if you wouldn't mind sending a link or two about all of this my way, (you seem to know at least a bit about it... that's more than me as of currently.) I'd be very appreciative.

From the point of a linux user (an incredibly biased linux user) I agree with all of this. And it's not only the Macintosh that this applies to, but also third party this-n-thats. I was a part of a homebrew development team for the PSP and DS (how profressional Rolling Eyes ), and we ended up installing cygwin on our Windows machines so that things would run correctly while in the development stage. I support the use of C++, and alternatives really boil down to what it is that you're developing on.

Well, most of what I found out was from Wikipedia, so I suppose Wiki-ing "Artificial Intelligence", "Lisp Machine" and "Lisp (programming language)" will give you a start. Note that I've only once coded in Lisp as a proof of concept for the PDP-1 emulator in SIMH, and that I'm not a very experienced programmer in any case.

The problem with the AI projects, as I see it, was the over-reaching of the programmers. Coding for artificial intelligence requires one to think of all of the possibilities, including those inputs which are deliberately or accidentally stupid. Note how quickly we can expose ELIZA-type programs for the AI constructs that they are, all by entering in stupid commands.

In a way, that's one of the things I like about Unix and its derivative systems: It punishes ignorance by being so volatile. OK, it punishes honest mistakes as well, but I suppose that it's a price to pay for the proven power that a properly implemented Unix-like system can provide (a la Linux, which unlike certain Unices, can have the bugs ironed out of it by coders). I might comment on how, with Ubuntu and the like, Linux is finally becoming user friendly, but that's as long as you stay within the confines of the GUI and leave the CLI for the programmers and power users.

So, why do I poo-poo Lisp as a programming language? I'm not hostile towards it, as it is a very good language. However, it's not the sort of language you do much useful stuff in, at least not with the current dialects. As I said, it's a toy, whereas C is a tool. A sledgehammer, possibly, but it definitely gets the job done, and I have an affection towards it, in the same way that I have an affection towards sledgehammers as a tool.
