Sounds a little like Marx.. "What!? Some people have lots of stuff, and I have nothing?! WE CAN'T HAVE THAT! Let's form a commune where we all share what we have! I'll share mine with you, and you share yours with me.." 
But seriously, Buddha said a few typically Easternesque platitudes that make no sense unless you do some really serious, deep 'interpreting' and now he's used as an emblem of ..accepting what you're given??
I guess that's why Buddhism isn't for me.

I think you're deluded. You are thinking of the historical Buddha (Siddartha Gutama) when in fact that is a statue of Maitreya (who is to come in the next era, which will be more prosperous). He's sort of like a better version of the Buddha, who will come at a time when realisation of the Dhamma is easier. Sort of like the Second Coming, but without the whole apocalypse. In fact, Maitreya will be a pretty good thing for humanity as a whole (with the whole salvation from suffering and all).
I'm not Buddhist, but I know a thing or two about it. If you are going to make a criticism of the Buddha, I think it would come from the whole family values side. He left his wife and kid to become a holy man in the woods. Of course, that'd be applying todays morals to a completly different society, but that's dualism for you. See history in yourself and you are wise; see yourself in history and you are tempting delusion (and being a post-modernist... Ugh).

The Buddha gave up his hedonistic life, and joined an ascetic sect, where poverty pain and suffering were inflicted upon the self, in order to save others from suffering. But, that wasn't the end of the story. Buddhism was formed when he came to the realization that neither hedonism nor asceticism were worth people's time, and advocated a middle way.
It's not "accept your place because poverty makes you holy." That's a complete misinterpretation. It's more like "end your attachments to the world, because the world sucks." |

Dito. But more specifically: life is all about suffering, and you can end this suffering by ending your addictions in life. Not just addictions to substances, but any kind of addiction. Addiction to desires, addiction to your senses...

His brother didn't believe in him? I think that's justified, then. Imagine if your family started to just pretend you didn't exist.
