Big Brother is handing out virtual medals to all his loyal party members for valiant acts of Outstanding Oratory and Persistent Proselytism. Big Brother feels it’s important to recognize loyal users and people with exceptional debating skills ... They should be recognized so it will be easier to find them and have them vaporized later.

These medals are a reference to a minor theme from Orwell's Animal Farm. In the book, Napoleon suddenly appears with two new medals on his chest – “Animal Hero, First Class,” and “Animal Hero, Second Class”. He hadn’t won these medals as a result of any sort of valiant deed. He simply awarded them to himself to make himself look important. And if Joseph Stalin can get away with pinning pointless and meaningless medals on himself to feed his own ego, why can’t we?

Medal of Conspicuous Verbosity - 1st class
This medal is awarded to users who have written many particularly long posts. The purpose is to recognize users who have written long essays, short stories, etc. Users are granted a certain number of points for each post longer than 1,000 words, based on the following equation:

(words / 1000) ^ 1.25
(1000 words = 1 point ... 3000 words = 3.94 points ... 5000 words = 7.47 points)

1st class = More than 200 points
2nd class = 100-199 total points
3rd class = 50-99 total points

This is a ranked award, with the top user receiving the 1st Class award, the next 3 users receiving the 2nd Class award, and the next 9 users receiving the 3rd class award.
